Sometimes called as split cane rods, bamboo fly rods are used in fly fishing and as the name itself suggests, they are made from bamboo which are sometimes referred to as cane.
Among the thousand species and hundred different kinds of bamboo, the most commonly used for fishing rods are Tonka Canes and sometimes Calcutta Canes. Tonka canes are grown in the Tonkin region of Guangdong, China. The species is very fibrous which makes it one of the strongest among bamboo species, and which also makes it popular among fishing rod makers, users, and collectors. Making bamboo fly rods takes a long time—it could take up to more than 100 hours because of the very meticulous process fishing rod makers have to follow in order to achieve a high quality rod. This is the reason why manufacturers sell bamboo fly rods for fly fishing at a very high price. Some collectors even pay around $15,000 for antique bamboo fly rods which are in very good condition.
